Aviemore has a long-held family-friendly reputation destination. My own family visited regularly but it has been nearly thirty years since I last stayed at Coylumbridge Hotel, now part of the Hilton group. Returning with our own young kids brought back a flood of happy memories. (Though I was a little disappointed to discover that they no longer had one of those original table-top space invader games in the bar). Escape to a luxury cabin, hot tub and forest in PerthshireSitting in a hot tub in a forest on the shore of Loch Lubnaig sipping a glass of Prosecco, savouring an oh so still evening drawing down, all I could think was, “oh yeah!”. Though I also remember the children banging on the patio glass doors mouthing, “We’re hungry,” or somesuch but patio glass is sound proof for a good reason. OK, I jest. Well, kind of. A deserted beach, fresh air and no screens!One balmy evening, last September, we stood atop a sand dune on the ‘Forth Riviera’ looking down at a white sandy mile-long beach and saw not one single person. It was hard to believe we were just a thirty minute drive east of Edinburgh. As we admired the stunning views of the Forth estuary and the Bass Rock, the kids bombed down the sand dune on the sledges they’d just borrowed from the ‘glamp site’. Continue reading
A luxury lochside retreat on Loch LongSitting in a hot tub on the shore of Long Long with a glass of wine while admiring the stunning views of the forest flowing down the mountainside almost into the loch, it was hard to believe we were little more than an hour’s drive from Glasgow. The former campsite on the Ardgartan promontory is now owned by Forest Holidays and in this fantastic location they have built 40 luxurious self-catering log cabins as well as a café and shop. Forest Holidays work in partnership with the Forestry Commission so there is a strong emphasis on creating eco-sensitive holidays. Continue reading

Options for everyone at the Macdonald Resort, AviemoreWe love the Macdonald Resort and have visited several times. The child-friendly facilities such as the Lagoon Pool, softplay, inflatable zone, full size cinema and numerous scheduled kids activities are really superb. The resort is a nice size, big enough to spread everybody out but nothing is too far apart to walk to. A Scottish city break in PerthIn 2014 we visited Best Western Queen’s Hotel (3 Star) in Perth which is conveniently located with its own parking right in the city centre. The very friendly staff were efficient and welcoming especially with the kids which was lovely. The little kids welcome pack produced on arrival proved popular through supper and beyond. The hotel has a pool, hot tub and gym which we enjoyed after our excursions.
Our evening meals were unexpectedly excellent, with really well-cooked food enjoyed by parents and children alike. In fact our eldest said it was the best spaghetti bolognese ever, unusually for a kids meal it was nicely flavoured but not too much to put them off. Continue reading
